Library Programs (Perfect for Tracking Minutes)

Austin Public Library

This summer, uou and your kids can participate in the APL reading challenge at any APL branch, including the newly reopening Old Quarry branch!

  • Dates: June 6 – August 8, 2026

  • The Scoop: APL is “roaring into summer” with a fun dinosaur-themed challenge this year! To kick things off, head to the Central Library on Saturday, June 6th (9:00 AM – 12:30 PM) for the Kids Block Party. Participants can sign up and track progress with Beanstack.

  • The Perks: Kids (and adults!) are challenged to read (or be read to!) 20 minutes a day, or a total of 600 minutes, and complete three activity badges. Kids who complete the challenge score a free book, and grownups can earn a summer reading mug (pro-tip: finish early before the mugs run out!).

Surrounding Metro Library Systems

If you live on the outskirts of Austin or just love a library road trip, our neighboring systems have fantastic, prize-packed programs that run through late July or early August:

  • Round Rock Public Library: RRPL is also going prehistoric with their “unearth a story” summer reading program.  Between June 1 and July 30, earn points for minutes read (or picture books completed) using the ReadSquared app for book bucks and prize vouchers. There are also special community missions readers can log for extra incentives.

  • Cedar Park Public Library: CCPL’s summer adventure and reading challenge runs from May 26 – August 8. Participants can log reading minutes in Beanstack to earn milestone rewards and virtual tickets for a variety of prize drawings. The more you read, the more chances you have to win!

  • Lake Travis Community Library & Leander Public Library: Both programs – Lake Travis and Leander – allow kids to pick up physical logs to track their reading time in exchange for treasure chest prizes and raffle entries.

  • Georgetown Public Library: GPL has summer reading programs with prizes for kids, tweens, teens, and adults.

Local Bookstores & The Austin ISD “5 Book Dive”

If your kids attend an Austin ISD school, you’re likely already familiar with the 5 Book Dive initiative. This summer, several of our favorite local bookshops are partnering up to reward kids who complete their 5 Book Dive bookmarks. It’s the perfect excuse to support the independent booksellers in our community while exploring different corners of the city!

BookPeople

  • Location: Downtown (603 N. Lamar Blvd)

  • The Scoop: As Austin’s flagship independent bookstore, BookPeople is a haven for young readers. Bring your child’s completed 5 Book Dive bookmark into the store, and they will receive a $5 gift certificate to spend on their next favorite story. Don’t forget to check their BookKids amphitheater calendar for summer author events and storytimes!

First Light Books

  • Location: Hyde Park / North Loop (4300 Speedway)

  • The Scoop: This cozy neighborhood spot is a beautiful place to spend a summer morning. They have two summer reading programs for kids – the Kids Book Club and the Summer Reading Adventure. When your young reader logs 30 books, First Light will reward them with a free lemonade and a cookie from their cafe counter.

Birdhouse Books & Gifts

  • Location: North-Central Austin (5925 Burnet Rd)

  • The Scoop: This gorgeous, neighborhood-focused shop is heavily invested in community and kids’ literacy. While they host fantastic recurring events—like their upcoming Swim Safety Story Time on June 14th—they also feature curated summer reading picks for kids and teens. Stop in to browse their vibrant children’s section and pick up a local reading recommendation.

Reverie Books

  • Location: South Austin (5419 Menchaca Rd)

  • The Scoop: Located in the heart of South Austin, Reverie Books is known for its community-centric, inclusive vibe. Keep an eye on their summer calendar for pop-up neighborhood book fairs, local author storytimes, and indie book clubs that make reading a highly social, fun activity for kids trying to stay connected over the break.

Lark & Owl Booksellers

  • Location: Georgetown (205 W. 6th St)

  • The Scoop: Worth the drive up I-35, Lark & Owl has partnered directly with the City of Georgetown Library for a massive, multi-age summer reading campaign. Ten lucky adult winners will get $20 gift cards to Lark & Owl, so check out the GPL summer programs!

Graphic Novels and Comic Books

If you have a graphic novel superfan, the minute-based library challenges at APL and Round Rock are a great fit, and even have a curated track of recommended reads for kids and teens into graphic novels, comics, and manga.

If your child is an aspiring graphic novelist who wants to learn how to bring their stories to life, check out Dragon’s Lair’s How to Make Comics summer camp the first week of August.

Rogue’s Gallery Comics & Games

  • Location: Round Rock (1601 N. IH-35)

  • Dates: Running through August 16, 2026

  • The Scoop: Got a kid who is obsessed with graphic novels, manga, or sci-fi? Rogue’s Gallery has its own dedicated Summer Reading Challenge. Kids choose five books from a specially curated summer reading list and write down or tell the staff their favorite part of each. Every completed packet gets a goodie bag of treats, and the earliest finishers get a special store gift coin!

The Nostalgic Return: Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program

Everything old is new again. While we’re giving our kids a 90s summer, let’s get ready for a massive wave of childhood nostalgia, 90s parents. The legendary Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program is back!

  • Dates: June through August 2026

  • How it works: Open to kids in Pre-K through 6th grade (ages 4–12), parents can register their kids online for the digital summer camp version of the program.

  • The Reward: You track your child’s reading goals online through their digital dashboard. When they hit their monthly milestone for June, July, and August, you’ll receive a digital coupon code valid for a free, single-topping Personal Pan Pizza from Pizza Hut.

There is truly nothing quite like celebrating a stack of finished books with a hot, cheesy pizza—just like we used to do back in the day.

Tips for Summer Reading Success:

  1. Audiobooks Count! Whether you’re driving down to the coast for a family weekend or just sitting in traffic on MoPac, listening to audiobooks absolutely counts toward public library minutes.

  2. Double Dip: Your child can track the same books for their school’s 5 Book Dive, the Austin Public Library challenge, and the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! program. Let them stack those rewards!

  3. Lead by Example: APL, Book People, Lark & Owl, and others have adult summer reading challenges too. Pick up a beach read or a gripping new thriller, log your own pages, and show your kids that reading is a lifelong hobby.

She is the author of three books and has published poems, short stories, and creative non-fiction works all over the country. Raised by a single father in the small town of Buffalo, Missouri, Kelly has fond memories of her poor rural upbringing in the Ozarks that strongly influence her writing and way of life. She’s a graduate of Missouri State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing. She has six-year-old identical twins and a full-time job, so writing and picking up LEGO are the only other things she can devote herself to. You can find all Kelly's work at kellyhitchcock.com.
